About us

The Réseau des Enseignants Franco-Immigrants de l'Alberta (REFIA) was created in response to several challenges faced by Francophone teachers from immigrant backgrounds in Alberta. Among the main reasons for its founding in October 2024, we can cite:

  1. Facilitating professional integration : Many French-speaking immigrant teachers encounter obstacles in integrating into the Alberta education system. REFIA aims to support them in this process.

  2. Create a support and mutual aid network : Professional isolation can be a challenge for newly arrived teachers. REFIA offers a space for exchange and sharing of experiences to break this isolation.

  3. Promoting the expertise of immigrant teachers : Despite their experience and qualifications, some teachers struggle to have their skills recognized. REFIA advocates for better recognition and integration of these talents in the Francophone educational environment in Alberta.

  4. Promoting professional development : The association offers training, workshops and resources to help teachers better understand the Alberta curriculum and develop their teaching skills.

  5. Strengthening the Francophonie in schools: By supporting immigrant Francophone teachers, REFIA contributes to the vitality of the Alberta Francophonie and to the quality of French education in the province.

Our Mission

REFIA 's mission is to facilitate the integration of immigrant Francophone teachers into Alberta's education system by providing them with opportunities for networking, sharing educational resources, professional development and socialization . Furthermore, through its many services offered to the community, the organization actively contributes to the development of the education system in Alberta , and more specifically to that of French-language education.

Our Commitment

Within the Réseau des Enseignants Franco-Immigrants de l'Alberta (REFIA), teachers support each other and ensure their well-being. REFIA plays a key role with parents, students, youth, educational communities and employers in Francophone education in Alberta. Through mentoring , training, workshops and networking , it facilitates the integration of immigrant teachers, improves the quality of teaching in French and supports the academic and professional development of the educational community.

Testimonials

“I arrived in Alberta a few months ago and was interested in becoming a teacher, but I didn't know
how to go about it. I was referred to Hugo who, through REFIA, supported me in the admission process. Since then, I have already participated in two workshops that helped me better understand the realities of the profession and the challenges I will face.
